Restore swim-safe water quality with CyanoShark’s chemical-free Blue-Green Algae treatment.

Swimmers at triathlon with a RanMarine CyanoShark

The Challenge explained

Every summer, the “Weerwater” in Almere becomes a global stage for the legendary Challenge Almere-Amsterdam triathlon. However, rising temperatures frequently trigger massive Blue-Green Algae (BGA) blooms. For an event involving over 3,500 athletes, these toxic blooms represent a critical threat, often leading to last-minute cancellations of the swim leg due to health hazards. Traditional chemical treatments are environmentally damaging, and mechanical removal is typically too slow to handle rapid bacterial growth. The city and event organizers required a high-tech, chemical-free solution capable of neutralizing the “toxin bomb” before it started, ensuring the water remained safe for recreational use and international competition.

The solution

To safeguard the event and the local community, the organisers integrated the RanMarine CyanoShark, featuring the patented Staged Flow Treatment System by Eget Liber, into the water management strategy. The adoption of this autonomous technology allowed for a transition from reactive crisis management to proactive water restoration. The CyanoShark was deployed directly along the swim course and where blooms were arising, utilising its unique internal treatment chamber. By passing contaminated water through a sequence of UV, Sonication, and Ozone, the vessel destroyed the bacteria internally. This method prevented the release of harmful toxins that commonly occurs when algae cells are ruptured by traditional mechanical means. Supported by the technical expertise of RanMarine, the vessel operated silently in both autonomous and remote-control modes, allowing for the precise targeting of high-density bloom areas while maintaining pristine water conditions without the use of chemicals.

The results

  • Significant Reduction: Decreased cyanobacteria concentration from 89.4 mcg/L to 27.9 mcg/L (a 68% drop) in just four days.
  • Operational Success: Secured a swim-safe environment for 3,500+ participants, allowing the event to proceed without health-related interruptions or the need to alter the swim course.
  • Eco-Friendly Restoration: Achieved “recreational-waters” standards using zero-emission technology, fully supporting local biodiversity and municipal environmental goals.
