A WasteShark in Canary Wharf waters, London

The Challenge explained

Managing the estate’s waterways presented a threefold challenge spanning high visitor footfall, physical access constraints, and biodiversity goals.

  • High-Volume Waste: 120,000 daily visitors and local construction generate steady floating debris in the docks.
  • Inaccessible Waterways: Narrow docks prevent access by traditional waste vehicles, causing uncollected trash to sink permanently.
  • Biodiversity Goals: Unmanaged surface waste conflicts with the estate’s mission to foster nature-positive urban environments.

The solution

RanMarine deployed an integrated solution combining the WasteShark with key operational accessories to handle the estate’s complex waterways.

  • Vessel & Setup: Launched in Middle Dock in March 2023 for Global Recycling Day, the project marked London’s first WasteShark deployment and RanMarine’s first corporate-developer partnership (with Britvia’s Aqua Libra).
  • Operational Access: To overcome difficult water entry, the team used the SharkCage, enabling seamless daily launch and retrieval by local operations.

The results

Throughout the 10-month deployment, the WasteShark delivered measurable environmental cleanup alongside massive global brand visibility for partners.

  • Efficiency & Daily Yield: Averaged 8.7 kg of organics and plastics collected per day, reaching up to 34 kg in a single run.
  • Waste Removal & Safety: Removed an estimated 730 kg of debris over 10 months; primarily biomass, plastic bottles, polystyrene, and textiles, ensuring clearer Canary Wharf waters.
  • Partnership & Stakeholder Value: Fully sponsor-funded by Aqua Libra / Britvic, who leveraged the pilot’s success to champion urban water stewardship at events like the Blue Earth Summit.

Media & Awareness Spotlight
Beyond waterway clean-up, the high-profile launch generated millions of impressions across global media, including Reuters, Euronews, the Evening Standard, and Oceanographic, delivering immense earned media value for Aqua Libra and Canary Wharf Group.
