Mission Accomplished: CyanoShark Supports Successful European Championship at Challenge Almere-Amsterdam Triathlon


We’re delighted to report that all swimming events at Challenge Almere-Amsterdam took place successfully in the Weerwaters of Almere, following our intensive pre-event water quality management programme.

Ten Days of Proactive Water Treatment

For ten consecutive days leading up to the Challenge Almere-Amsterdam triathlon, incorporating the European Championship Long Distance, our CyanoShark system was deployed daily on the swimming course. Over more than 50 hours of active operation, the team and CyanoShark worked tirelessly to disrupt cyanobacteria concentrations and mitigate potentially hazardous blue-green algae levels in the lake.

While cyanobacteria levels are influenced by numerous environmental factors including weather patterns, sunlight exposure, rainfall, and wind conditions; all of which remained beyond the event’s control, our sustained intervention played a crucial role in reducing the risk levels and creating safer swimming conditions for Europe’s and the Netherlands finest triathletes.

The successful outcome demonstrates what can be achieved when innovative technology meets proactive event management. The Challenge
As summer conditions across Europe create ideal environments for blue-green algae proliferation, outdoor aquatic events face increasing water quality management challenges. Whilst blue-green algae occurs naturally in water bodies at low levels and is typically harmless, it can multiply to concerning concentrations under certain conditions, potentially impacting athlete safety.
Our Solution in Action
From start September through 11 September, our CyanoShark system is being deployed daily on the Challenge Almere-Amsterdam swimming course. This cutting-edge technology employs multi-modal, chemical-free treatment methods to safely disrupt and neutralise harmful algae growth whilst minimising impact on other aquatic life.
The CyanoShark represents a breakthrough in sustainable water treatment, offering event organisers a proactive solution that works with natural ecosystems rather than against them. Unlike traditional chemical treatments, our approach maintains the delicate balance of aquatic environments whilst addressing specific water quality concerns.

Suppliers Identified for Blue-Green Algae Solutions in Ireland

RanMarine is thrilled to announce our collaboration withย ๐—–๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐—ช๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ฆ๐˜†๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜€ ๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฑย andย Eget Liberย as part of a consortium selected among five successful tenders for a groundbreaking initiative to tackle cyanobacteria inย Lough Neagh, Northern Ireland.ย A ยฃ450,000 grant is funding the initial phase of a project to evaluate potential solutions for combating cyanobacteria/ Blue-Green algae blooms in water bodies. These harmful algal growths produce toxins that pose significant risks to both aquatic ecosystems and human health, necessitating effective intervention strategies.

Our innovative approach combines the strengths of all three partners to effectively address this challenge:

RanMarine Technology will deploy its world-leading Autonomous Surface Vessel (ASV), equipped with advanced sensors and communication systems, to enable efficient monitoring and real-time data collection of cyanobacteria blooms. The ASV acts as a mobile platform that can operate autonomously, facilitating precise mapping and targeted treatment of algal growth.

Their focus on innovative techniques ensures that the holistic solution is both effective and environmentally sustainable.

Eget Liber will contribute its patented non-chemical Staged Flow Treatment System (SFTS), which effectively disrupts and eradicates cyanobacteria in situ while preserving the surrounding ecosystem. The SFTS is designed to operate within the upper water column, targeting the conditions where cyanobacteria thrive, thereby reducing water toxicity and nutrient levels.

Together, our fleet-based solution maximises efficiency and ensures rapid response times while adhering to strict environmental protocols. This first-phase assessment is crucial in identifying the best suitable solutions to enhance the long-term water quality of Lough Neagh and safeguard its natural ecosystems.
