The WasteShark collects floating litter and removes rapidly growing duckweed in urban canals, keeping Zaanstad an attractive city

The city council of Zaanstad is using RanMarine's WasteShark. They named it Vuilvreter, which is local slang for dirt eater.

The Challenge explained

The maintenance department of the city of Zaanstad manages a complex network of historic and urban waterways, including canals and moats, which are vital for local quality of life and tourism (such as the Zaanse Schans area). The main challenge is twofold: Seasonal Biomass (like duckweed and aquatic plants) caused clogging and diminished water quality, while floating litter and debris impaired flow and marred the appearance of the area. Traditional manual clearing was costly, labor-intensive, and failed to offer a continuous solution. The Municipality required a scalable, cost-effective, and emission-free method to address this problem structurally.

The solution

The Municipality of Zaanstad partnered with RanMarine, deploying the WasteShark. Involving the people from Zaanstad has been an important element, also resulting in this new name: Veulvreter. The WasteShark can easily be used by the existing team as an additional tool for canal clean ups. Expertise of the existing team is very helpful in defining where debris accumulates due to wind and current. This enables rapid and easy to execute interventions. Especially the location “Gedempte Gracht” is a great source for WasteShark food. Super scalable and very efficient!

The results

  • Speeded up their cleaning operations 85%.
  • Zero emission interventions, supporting the sustainability goals of the Municipality of Zaanstad for clean and quiet operations.
  • Agile and collection capacity of vessel to remove floating debris and duckweed daily.
