The maintenance department of the city of Zaanstad manages a complex network of historic and urban waterways, including canals and moats, which are vital for local quality of life and tourism (such as the Zaanse Schans area). The main challenge is twofold: Seasonal Biomass (like duckweed and aquatic plants) caused clogging and diminished water quality, while floating litter and debris impaired flow and marred the appearance of the area. Traditional manual clearing was costly, labor-intensive, and failed to offer a continuous solution. The Municipality required a scalable, cost-effective, and emission-free method to address this problem structurally.
The Municipality of Zaanstad partnered with RanMarine, deploying the WasteShark. Involving the people from Zaanstad has been an important element, also resulting in this new name: Veulvreter. The WasteShark can easily be used by the existing team as an additional tool for canal clean ups. Expertise of the existing team is very helpful in defining where debris accumulates due to wind and current. This enables rapid and easy to execute interventions. Especially the location “Gedempte Gracht” is a great source for WasteShark food. Super scalable and very efficient!
