Maintaining pristine water quality across vast, debris-prone commercial waterfronts using traditional methods was labour-intensive, inefficient and lacked audit data

The Challenge explained

BIC Consolidated, a leader in facilities management across Australia, faced the challenge of delivering consistent, high-quality maintenance services in demanding commercial and waterfront environments (such as managed ports, large marinas, and urban development areas). Manual cleanup was required frequently due to high pedestrian and boat traffic leading to significant floating debris and litter. This required allocating staff to low-value, repetitive tasks, driving up labor overhead (OpEx) and limiting service consistency. BIC Consolidated needed an autonomous, auditable solution to reduce manual dependency on water, free up staff for higher-value facility tasks, and meet client expectations for sustainability.

The solution

BIC Consolidated partnered with RanMarine, integrating the WasteShark Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) model into its facilities management contracts. The Autonomous WasteShark was deployed to operate autonomously along pre-programmed routes in the managed aquatic zones. The RaaS model was chosen specifically for its OpEx predictability, eliminating the need for a large capital purchase and ensuring all maintenance and software updates were handled by RanMarine. The WasteShark enabled BIC Consolidated to:

  1. Automate Debris Capture: Guarantee continuous removal of floating litter, plastics, and debris.
  2. Optimize Staff Allocation: Reassign facilities staff from constant, reactive cleanup duties to proactive, higher-value maintenance and auditing tasks.

Provide Auditable Data: Utilize the RanMarine Connect platform to provide clients with verified, geo-tagged reports on waste volume removed and water quality status.

The results

  • WasteShark deployment resulted in an 85% reduction in manual labour hours for waterborne clean-up, establishing a predictable, auditable, and emission-free solution for aquatic facilities’ management.
  • Improved service delivery by handling clean-up outside of peak operational hours without labour cost increase.
  • Able to collect up to 500 kg. (1,100 lbs) of debris per day per unit.
  • 100% emission free interventions.
