Innovation Wednesday’s The RanMarine WasteShark

The degree of cleanliness of any space often tells the story of the owners or the inhabitants of the area. According to the stats, the world produces about 300 million tonnes of plastic with between 5 and 12 million tonnes of that finding its way into the oceans. Moreover, in 2020 South Africa was ranked as the 11th worst offender in terms of land-based sources of litter entering the sea. However, someone who once called himself an “accidental environmentalist” created a water-cleaning robot after he witnessed two men struggling to catch debris in the ocean from their boat in Cape Town. The robot is called The RanMarine WasteShark and its creator, Richard Hardiman joins Lerato Mbele to walk us through this innovation.
