Levers of economic development, but also places of life, ports constitute an important factor of attractiveness of the territories. Their development must be accompanied by specific measures to preserve the natural environment in which they occur. Releases of macro-waste, sewage from ships or even hydrocarbons pollution is likely to affect the aquatic environments of harbor areas. 
Focus on four innovations to preserve water quality and protect biodiversity in ports.


An aquatic drone that monitors and cleans the harbor waters.

The port authorities in Rotterdam, one of the largest ports in the world, have put in place an unusual solution to combat macro-waste: the Waste Shark. Developed by the company RanMarine Technology, this marine drone can suck up to 500 kilos of waste. The size of a small car, it has a “mouth” in the form of an opening located 35 cm below the level of the water. In addition to collecting waste, Waste Shark collects data on water quality, weather, and depth of harbor waters, and then transmitted to the authorities. Four “Waste Shark” were tested for six months in the Port of Rotterdam as part of a pilot project.
